Station History
WCTR-AM, known as "The Town", originally went on the air on AM 1530 in 1962 and has been faithfully serving its local communities ever since. The station was originally a 250 watt daytimer, but it subsequently received permission from the FCC to increase its power to 1,000 watts. And recently, WCTR added an FM frequency covering the Chestertown area on
FM 102.3.
It's studio, transmitter and 187-foot tower are located at 231 Flatland Road in Chestertown, Maryland. The site is known as "Signal Hill", one of the highest points in Kent & Queen Anne's counties.
The licensee of WCTR is WCTR Broadcasting, LLC, a company owned by Dick Gelfman, an award-winning journalist familiar to many in Maryland from his many years in Baltimore television. The station continues to operate as a truly local, community- oriented broadcaster, providing local news, sports, weather, community events, local talk shows and much, much more.
