Peter and the Starcatcher
Location Everett Theatre, Main Street, Middletown
Fans of Peter Pan will find themselves lost [boys] in the Everett Theatre’s production of the hilariously entertaining backstory of Peter Pan, Peter and the Starcatcher—premiering this weekend and continuing into next! The show features the classic characters of Peter, the Lost Boys, pirates, mermaids, and the natives of Neverland, but not in the way you would expect them. In the beginning of the show, Peter is a sad and lonely orphan, the mermaids are just ordinary fish, and the pirates are in need of a hero to thwart their villainous plans… But with a pinch of magical starstuff, things are no longer what they seem. How did Peter learn to fly? How did Captain Hook lose his hand? How did the Lost Boys get so lost? The answers to all these questions will be explained in a hysterical comedy full of witty puns and told by endearing characters with delightful enthusiasm that brings the characters’ story to life. Characters like Molly Aster, a feisty thirteen year old and the only girl in the show—cast in the original production to symbolize the isolation of girls in any job during the Victorian era. Other enthralling individuals include Mrs. Bumbrake, Molly’s governess, who is a little less feminine than she appears; Smee, Captain Hook’s bumbling, goofy sidekick who has a remarkable way with words; and Peter, who just wants to be a boy and have fun for a while. They are all brought together by a special mission to keep magic out of the wrong hands.
The members of the small, extremely talented cast repeatedly appear and disappear throughout the show in various roles, doubling as narrators, sea creatures, natives, and even set pieces. There are sword fights and word fights, and characters often find themselves in contrasting situations with their juxtaposed double… Turnabout is definitely fair play in this drama. The actors reach deep within themselves to bring their characters to life, and you’ll find yourself enthralled in the action, comedy, fun and mystique that is part of this pre-Neverland world. So venture to the Everett knowing that “all the world is made of faith, trust, and pixie dust”, and discover the Neverland that you never knew…
