Snowstorm & Cold Weather Safety: Key Tips

  • Stay off the roads if possible — most injuries occur after the storm, not during it.
  • Charge phones, weather radios, and backup battery packs before the storm arrives.
  • Stock essentials: food, water, medications, pet supplies, and flashlights.
  • Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full in case of emergencies or detours.
  • Prepare a car emergency kit: blanket, flashlight, snacks, water, gloves, and ice scraper.
  • Dress in layers: moisture‑wicking base layer, insulation, and a wind‑resistant outer layer.
  • Watch for hypothermia signs: uncontrollable shivering, confusion, slurred speech.
  • Protect against frostbite — cover fingers, toes, ears, and nose in extreme cold.
  • Use space heaters safely and keep them at least three feet from anything flammable.
  • Never use grills, generators, or propane heaters indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.
  • Make sure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working on every level of your home.
  • Close off unused rooms to conserve heat during power outages.
  • Shovel snow in small amounts to avoid strain — heavy snow can trigger heart attacks.
  • Clear snow away from furnace and dryer vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Check on elderly neighbors or anyone living alone after the storm.

REMEMBER TO BRING IN YOUR PETS!   IF YOU ARE COLD, SO ARE THEY!
